What is an Argumentative Essay?

An argumentative essay is an essay where you are taking a position on an issue and providing evidence to support that position. A good argumentative essay:

  • ...has a clear, concise thesis that tells the reader what position you are taking. Your thesis should be arguable, meaning that rather than just stating a fact (i.e. Yoga is good for your mental health.), it is something that could have another or multiple sides.
  • ...addresses the opposing sides in a way that shows why they are a weaker argument.
  • ...provides strong evidence in the form of quotes, studies, statistics, and/or facts to support your claim.
  • ...has been proofread to contain no grammatical errors, follow the proper citation style, and make logical sense.
  • ...ends with a conclusion that ties all of your points together to make a case for why your argument is stronger than the opposing side.
