PSY/SOC 240 - McAuley

How to Find Your Sources

A requirement for each of your three Research Method Proposals is 3 references related to your topic. These references need to come from academic journals. What should you look for to fulfill this requirement? Here are some pointers:

  • Limit your results to "peer reviewed" research articles, so that you can find studies similar to the one you designed for this assignment & full text, which gives you access to the whole article
  • Make sure that the references are to articles on studies that used the same research method.
    • For Research Method Proposal 1, that would be naturalistic observation, which is a type of qualitative research design focused on observing people in a public setting.
    • Both Research Method Proposals 2 and 3 are quantitative research designs with independent and dependent variables. For Proposal 2, there needs to be an experimental and a control group. For Proposal 3, there needs to be a larger group that has been divided based on some factor that separates its members (for ex., age, college major, race/ethnicity)
  • You can find out if the article will work by reading its abstract, which will always tell you the basics of the research design

Where to Find Your Sources

I recommend these databases, which are collections of research articles and other scholarly resources, for you to find the sources you need for your assignments in this course:

Research Library: Social Sciences (ProQuest)

APA PsychArticles (EBSCOhost)

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection (EBSCOhost)

Sociology Database (ProQuest)

Here are web pages linking to our best Psychology and Sociology resources. These include research articles, videos, and encyclopedias. Some of these resources may be helpful for background information, but they may not be what you need as sources for your course assignments.
