Research 101: Introduction

In this guide, you will find resources in...

Take Note:

Primary Boolean Operators

(best practice, always CAPITALIZE)

  • AND: Combines keywords and requires all terms to be present in the search results. This is used to narrow down searches.
    • Examplecats AND dogs will only show results that mention both "cats" and "dogs".
  • OR: Combines keywords and includes results that contain at least one of the terms. This is used to broaden searches and include synonyms.
    • Examplecats OR kittens will show results that contain either "cats" or "kittens".
  • NOT: Excludes a specific keyword from the results. This is used to narrow a search by eliminating irrelevant topics.
    • Examplecats NOT dogs will show results about "cats" but will exclude any that also mention "dogs"

Using quotation marks on your search words will generate resources with those words together.

Example: "toxic masculinity" or "gender inequality"

Additional Citation Resources

Need more help with citation? See the resources below.

Take Note:

If a quotation is over 40 words, there are 3 options for handling it:

  • Shorten, using an ellipsis
  • Paraphrase
  • Format as a block quote

The best option depends on citation style and the context of the assignment.

Method 1: Shorten with an ellipsis

Use an ellipsis (...) to indicate words omitted from the middle of the quote.

This is useful when only a specific part of a longer passage is relevant to the point.

Example

  • Original text: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated..."
  • With ellipsis: "The right of the people to be secure . . . against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated..."

Method 2: Paraphrase

Paraphrasing means putting the original author's ideas into one's own words, which can help demonstrate understanding and maintain the writing voice.

To paraphrase well, understand the source, write the idea without looking at it, compare paraphrasing to the original to avoid similar wording, and remember to cite the source.

Method 3: Use a block quote

For lengthy quotes, especially in textual analysis, many style guides require a block quote format.

This involves starting the quote on a new line, indenting the entire passage, not using quotation marks, introducing it with a complete sentence followed by a colon, and placing the citation after the final punctuation.

It's important to check your specific style guide, as rules can vary between styles like APA and MLA.
